How to Mix the Perfect Product Cocktail

For guys, it can be hard enough just picking out one type of product to get the look you desire. But what happens when you need two or three products to give your ‘do the perfect hold, shine and volume?

Mixing the perfect product combo is similar to mixing the perfect drink: One wrong move, and your entire night could be ruined. But with the right tips and a little practice, you’ll be able to create perfect hair product cocktails for your hair type to get the style you’re looking for.

How to Choose Products to Blend

A good rule of thumb is to blend products that promise the same outcome to prevent clashing. If both products are working toward the same style, you can skimp on the package instructions. For example, if one products says to apply on damp hair and the other suggest a dry start, don’t worry. With the exception of hair and finishing sprays, most styling products work well on towel-dried hair.

How Much Is the Right Amount

With most salon products, a little bit can go a long way. That rule is even truer for gents with super short hair.

Start by putting a dime-sized amount (or a little less) of each product on the palm of your hand. Rub your hands together to evenly mix the products before working them into your hair. Then apply the mixture into your hair with your fingers, focusing mostly on the ends of your hair.

If you need more after all the product is gone from your hands, add more to your hands before repeating the process in your hair. You might find you need a little more of one product or another – but you’ll only figure that out with practice.

Constructed Curls

For curly guys, product cocktails takes some serious trial and error. To start, try American Crew Curl Construct with American Crew Curl Control. Work a small amount of each into your hands before working into your curls, twisting strands around your fingers as you go to help define them. Finish with American Crew Medium Hold Spray Gel. For extra volume, blow dry with a diffuser instead of air drying.

High & Messy

For longer hair, try a voluminous tousled style for a casual-chic look. Start with American Crew Boost Cream and American Crew Ultramatte for added lift and texture. Work through your strands, then blow dry on low heat. Finish by sprinkling American Crew Boost Powder onto your strands, then roughing it up a bit for that perfect messy look.

Slicked and Sleek

American Crew Pomade and American Crew Superglue are the perfect mix for slicked-back styles. Work a small amount of each into the palms of your hands, then use it to comb your hair back on your head. If needed, follow with a fine-toothed comb after all the product is emulsified into your hair.

Second Day Styles

If you don’t have time to start completely over, a second-day hair product cocktail will do the trick. Start with a dry shampoo or powder like American Crew Boost Powder to help absorb extra oil. Style as usual with a dry spray like American Crew Grooming Spray.

Remember: It can be difficult to find one product that gives you everything you need to create the style you want. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different combinations to find the cocktail that works for your hair type, length and desired style.
