How To Tease Your Hair The Right Way

It’s time to go big or go home…with your hair, that is! Long before Jersey Shore alum Snooki, perfected “The Pouf,” big hair was around and making a statement. To achieve a show-stopping look of your very own, you’ll need to do one thing: tease your hair. Yes, teased hair is a must (but no, definitely NOT like Snooki’s!). It is the perfect way to add a little height to any hairdo! Want some sexy volume at the crown? How about a flirty high ponytail? Need your hair to have more texture and shape? Tease, tease, tease.

Since teased hair can be incorporated into so many different hairstyles, you’ll need to know how to do it right – without damaging your hair. Thankfully, at Hairstyles Weekly, we have got you covered. We are bringing you the best tips and tricks to get the perfect tease every time. So pay attention! This is our how-to guide to tease your hair the right way.

Grab Your Teasing Tools

Once you get out of the shower and dry your hair, it is time to get your tools ready. There are certain things you’ll need to have in order to get the look you crave. Let’s start with the products. The best products for teasing hair are things like texturizing or teasing sprays. A spray like this gives your hair tons of height without causing any hair damage. Another product you’ll need is a great volumizing hairspray.

A line I love for serious volume? TIGI Catwalk Your Highness! Using these products is a surefire way to get the sky-high look you crave. Check out “Shop the Story” below for detailed product picks.

Once you have all of those hair products ready to go, you’ll need to grab the right hair tools. You can always grab a standard teasing comb from your bathroom counter, but if you want to avoid hair damage and still get the results you want, grab a bristle-teasing bush instead. (These can be found in any beauty supply store!) These brushes create enough friction to give your hair volume and lift without breaking the hair.

It All Starts in the Shower

Ready to add a little oomph to your favorite hairstyle? Well, you’ll need to start in the shower. Yes, the first thing to do is figure out the best products for teasing hair. Why? You’ll need to incorporate these products into your morning routine…and leave some of the others behind. If you have a specific teased ‘do in mind, avoid using conditioners of any kind the day or and skip out on silicone-based products like styling creams or frizz reducing serums. Why is this step important? You want your hair to have as much grip as possible. Things like conditioners create a smoother surface, which will make it more difficult to create the volume you need.

Creating the Perfect Tease

Now that you know how to prep your hair, it is time to get your tease on! Start by spritizing dry hair with that TIGI spray. This will give you even more volume when you start to tease. Next, sectioning. Whatever area you plan on teasing, leave a thin section of hair free in the front. (You will need this to cover up the teased part later!) Pin or clip that out of the way for now. Then begin taking sections of hair that are half an inch wide. Pull each section of hair away from the head and pick up that teasing brush.

Start at the root and brush your hair in the opposite direction that you normally would. This is important because brushing it in the opposite way will create friction – which will give you all of that volume! Continue to do this in short strokes until you reach your desired height. Do this until you’ve teased the areas that you want completely.

Remember that section of hair you clipped to the side? It’s time to let it down. Take the hair and smooth it right over the teased sections of hair. From there you can pin it in place, pull it up into a bun or ponytail, or add on a hair band. There are so many options! Finish it all off with that volumizing hairspray and take a look at the end result. One word: fabulous.

Teased hair is always a good look. That’s why you need to do it the right way! To avoid hair damage and to make sure your hair lasts all day long, use the right tools and products. You’ll be amazed at how much you love your new style.
