How To Use Dry Spray Wax

If there is ANY hair product that doesn’t get the recognition it deserves, it’s dry spray wax. I mean, I’ll be the first to admit I was scoffed at the idea of it when I first saw it. I’ll also admit once I had dry spray wax in my hand I was 150% clueless on what to do with it. The good news? Dry spray wax is easy to use. So easy that it will take a drab hair day and – by some magical hair force – make your hair look BOMB. Yes, I just said bomb.

Still not convinced? Keep reading for tips and tricks on how to use dry spray wax.

Why Wax?

My first question after my stylist recommended I try Joico Texture Boost Dry Spray: “Why can’t I just use hairspray?” Her response? “Because the style you want isn’t achieved through hairspray.”

My dream hairstyle is carefree, tousled and bouncy. While hairspray is an outlet for a style like this, it is much more a firm hold for a particular style that I have to create. Hairspray is a final step. Dry spray wax, on the other hand, does most of the styling for me, all I really need is my hands and a hair brush.

How Wax?

Let’s talk application. The perk of using a spray wax versus a pomade is that the spray formula is less likely to stick or bulk up on hair. To give a clear testimony of how to use this product, I mapped out my style routine for my beachy wave look.

Step One: Brush your hair thoroughly. I mean this. If you hair is knotty or clumped up, the spray wax is going to clump it even more!

Step Two: Take one to two inch sections and spray wax from 10-12 inches away.

Step Three: Intertwine your hair with your finger, as if you were making it into a curl. Hold for a few seconds.

Step Four: Check out your waves. Are they too tight? Place the blowdryer on low and blow air from root to tip, tousling with your hands. Are they not tight enough? Consider using a curling wand to intensify some strands.

Step Five: Finish your style with a hairspray. Because the wax has holding power, you can use a lighter hold hairspray. Joico JoiMist Medium is a great option that won’t leave your hair feeling sticky or coarse.

Note: Another option is to use spray wax as a texturizer to an existing style. I loved straightening my hair, then spraying two inch sections. This will give you that “grunge princess” style we all love so much!

My last words to you are this: Since using Joico’s Texture Boost Dry Spray Wax I have had more GREAT hair days than bad. Plus, my style time has been cut down my 10 minutes (because the product does all the texturizing for me).

Ready to wash that wax out and start your style over? Lather up with a clarifying shampoo that will rid hair of any product build up. Try Joico K-PAK Clarifying Shampoo and follow up with the matching conditioner.

So, what do you think? Ready to give dry spray wax a shot?
