Peppermint Oil for Hair Growth: Is it Effective?

Snow days, holiday decorations, peppermint mochas from Starbucks, winter hats, and adorable little elves – these are a few of my favorite things about winter. While I love this time of year (I’m one of those rare people who wouldn’t move to Florida during the winter because I’d miss the snow too much), winter can be harsh on your hair. Snow and icy cold weather can make your hair brittle and dry, which causes hair damage and hinders hair grow. Yikes!

If you’re looking for some holiday inspiration for your hair care routine this winter, peppermint oil is a great place to start!

Why should I use peppermint oil? Will it grow my hair?

The short answer is yes! Peppermint oil can promote hair growth by opening up the pores on your scalp and stimulating your hair follicles. Here are three over reasons you’ll love using peppermint oil this winter:

1) Your hair will smell like Christmas all day long. Even better? If you have an upset stomach from eating too much food at your upcoming holiday parties, the smell of peppermint is known to help with nausea. So you’ll feel and look better using peppermint oil!

2) You’ll LOVE the tingling sensation. If you use Paul Mitchell’s Tea Tree Shampoo and Conditioner with tea tree oil, lavender, and peppermint then you’re probably used to this amazing tingling sensation. The tingling of the scalp helps to stimulate your hair follicles (facilitating growth).

3) Your dry hair will thank you for the extra hydration. Peppermint oil will make your hair feel (and look) shinny and soft. Best of all – peppermint oil is a light oil, so you shouldn’t notice your hair feeling extra greasy or oily either!

Where can I find peppermint oil?

You can purchase peppermint oil at many herb shops and some hair salons. It never hurts to ask your stylist if she uses peppermint oil and where she buys it.

How do I apply peppermint oil to my hair?

Does Peppermint Oil Really Make Hair Grow?

To maximize the effectiveness of the peppermint oil, make sure you mix three drops of the oil with three teaspoons of water. Shake the mixture together and then massage it into your scalp for about sixty seconds. Let the peppermint oil sit on your hair for 5-10 minutes so the oil has time to absorb into your pores. Try following plan once a week to see how your hair reacts to peppermint oil.
