Turns out, some of our every day habits may be exactly what is making our hair thinner. What habits are you guilty of that are causing some major damage and consequently causing breakage and thinning your hair. Even if you’re a regular offender, there are easy steps you can take to minimize the effects.
1. Taking Really Hot Showers
Hot water dehydrates skin so guess what it will do to your hair? You got it, dehydrate it. The daily washes and really hot water will quickly wash all of your hair’s protective oils right down the drain. And that heat? The heat will kick your scalps pores into double time to keep up with all the oils you’re washing down the drain. All that extra oil can damage the root and lead to additional shedding.
Easy Fix: Turn down the temp when you’re shampooing and conditioning your hair. If you keep the water cool when rinsing out conditioner, you’ll lock in the moisture for uber hydrated hair!
2. Mistreating Wet Hair
We all do it: get out of the shower and throw your hair up in a towel. While throwing it up in the towel isn’t the worst offense, it’s aggressively towel drying that is. Hair strands are way more fragile when they are wet which means they are prone to breakage. The towel drying and then brushing hair will lead to strands snapping off.
Easy Fix: Pat (no rubbing) the excess water from your hair and then comb through strands with a wide tooth comb. Adding a leave-in treatment makes a huge difference. Try: Nioxin Intensive Therapy Hair Booster.
3. The Spring Break Diet
Depriving your body of essential nutrients is a sure way to make your hair fall out at a rapid rate. When to body is on low power it sends all the remaining nutrients to the heart and brain, not your hair follicles.
Easy Fix: Eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly to keep your body and hair healthy and strong. If you’re looking to add strength to your hair, eat a diet with plenty of lean protein, that’s what your hair is made of after all!
4. Over-using Hot Styling Tools
There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. I know the hot styling tools can do amazing things to hair but, when used excessively and/or without the proper pre-styling products they can do some serious damage. The scorching temps can quickly damage the proteins that make up your hair and the protective cuticle which will mess up with moisture balance and leave your hair susceptible to breakage.
Easy Fix: ALWAYS use a pre-styling protective product like Nioxin Styling Therm-Activ Protector and try taking a hot styling tool hiatus every once in a while or maybe do an every-other-day thing. Either way, just give your hair a break every now and then, ok?
Whether you’re guilty of 1 or at times all 4, it’s important that if you want thick, full, healthy hair you treat it with some TLC and make sure it has what it needs to thrive. Which habit are you going to break this week?
